1. Consider Underexposing your Shot It isn’t uncommon to find stills in which water is overexposed and ends up looking plain white. Well, over-exposure is the one to blame in such a case. Your camera meter may not detect water when it is just a part of your frame, resulting in an overexposed shot. When capturing stills where water bodies are present, you may want to play around with the manual exposure settings to find a perfect middle ground to avoid such overexposure of water. Locate the plus and minus (exposure compensation) buttons on your camera and tweak the exposure settings till you achieve the desired output.

2. Try Experimenting with LED Lights

When capturing swimming pools and such water bodies in specific, it helps to experiment with LED lighting. Doing so can not only help you play around with the lighting but also with the color of the water as well. The next time you photograph a swimming pool in the evening, watch out for in-pool LED lighting and think of ways to leverage it to add depth and sophistication to your stills.

3. Keep Varying the Shutter Speed

Dreamy-looking water bodies and water splashes are two things most photographers would want to capture when clicking water-themed stills. Such stills can be easily captured by varying the shutter speed. While a long shutter speed can help you shoot dreamy-looking water bodies(eg. 5-10sec exposure), short shutter speed (eg. 1/500s) can help you capture water splash. All you need to do is find the ideal shutter speed setting for your desired shot.

4. Find the Best Time to Capture Reflections

Capturing reflections can be fairly simple, provided you know the right time to capture them. Evenings and mornings are generally the best times to capture stunning reflections on water bodies such as lakes and rivers. You may want to position your camera in such a way that you would capture more of the reflections and less of the shoreline. Also, try capturing both the shore and reflections in equal parts for introducing a sense of balance in your stills.

The Last Word

Apart from a grasp of photography skills, the key to capturing amazing water-themed shots lies in planning ahead. Decide upon the theme, location, and the right time for shooting in advance. Portrait photography is often considered one of the most challenging genres of photography. On top of having a command over camera settings and shooting dynamics, portrait photographers also need to establish a connection with their subject. Pulling it all off successfully, therefore, requires hours of practice and rich experience, along with the knowledge of right techniques and tips. That’s what you exactly get when you take Nikon’s online photography classes. Learn from the veterans of the field and find out all there is to know about clicking stunning portraits. To help, in this blog post, we present a 101 guide to portrait photography. Read on.

Prepare your Subject

Portrait photography requires you to connect with your subject and make them feel comfortable. On top of it, you also have to get up-close with your subject and not everyone is comfortable being photographed at such a close distance. It, therefore, becomes necessary to prepare your subject prior to shooting. Ideally, your subject should be stress free, comfortable, and in their element to help you capture lively portraits. Speak with your subject, get them acquainted with the poses and the kind of stills you plan on capturing.

Pay Attention to the Background

When it comes to portrait photography, the background you choose is also as important as your subject. Avoid choosing busy backgrounds as they rob the attention from the subject. Aim for a neutral background without any clutter to ensure that your viewer will focus on your subject alone. That said, you do not always have to go for a simple plain background. While shooting street portraits at Night, try shooting on a widest aperture available on your lens. This will allow you to get crips and soft bokeh of lights in the background. You can, for instance, add rice lights in the background or shoot against a colourful backdrop for more depth.

Get the Pose Right

After getting your subject comfortable and picking a background that works well, you would next have to focus on helping your subject pose according to your requirements. Take some time to get your subject acquainted with the pose you want. During shooting, feel free to offer feedback and suggestions to get the pose right. Keep some reference shots handy to clearly communicate your ideas with the subject. You are not sure about what pose to get started with, you can have your subject lean into the camera for an engaging, lively appeal.

Ensure the Lighting is On Point

Lighting is one of the most crucial aspects of any genre of photography. When it comes to portrait photography in specific, it is advisable to work in a well-lit condition. In most cases, natural daylight is considered the best kind of lighting to capture portraits. While working under direct sunlight can produce harsh results, you can have your subject’s back towards the direction of sunlight for creating a backlight effect. Use a reflector to fill in light into shadows and create subtle catch light in the subject’s eyes.An overcast day is also a great opportunity as it produces soft lighting that’s ideal for capturing portraits.

Choose a Shallow Depth of Field

Shooting in a shallow depth of field is perhaps one of the most common portrait photography tips out there. By doing so, you can get to place your subject against a background that is soft and blurred out, helping your subject stand out and receive complete attention from viewers. Adjusting the lens aperture helps you control the depth of field on your camera. Generally speaking, wider apertures produce greater blur in the background; so consider shooting with the largest aperture available in your lens.

Wrap Up

Clicking professional looking portraits doesn’t require you to invest in an expensive lighting setup or complex gear. A comfortable subject, favourable background, natural lighting, ability to work with your camera settings, and a strong foundation in basics of portrait photography can help you do a lot. That’s when basic Nikon photography

www.CaptureWithNikon.in, Nikon India’s online photography community, can help. Starting from basic Nikon photography tips to expert tricks, you stand to learn a great deal by being part of Nikon’s vibrant photography community. To help you get started, in this post, we share five basic photography terms every photographer must know. Read on.

1. Focal Length

Focal length tells you the distance between the camera lens and the image formed on the film. Expressed in millimeters, focal length helps you gauge how ‘zoomed in’ an image may appear. While a lens with short focal length, say 18 mm, may give you a wider angle, a longer lens such as a 100 mm one, will give you a narrow, ‘zoomed in’ output. Based on the focal length, lenses are broadly classified in-to Wide angle lens and Telephoto lens.

2. Exposure

In the world of photography, the term exposure may mean a number of things. Broadly speaking, though, exposure has got to do with the amount of light camera capture in a particular photograph. The more you expose the camera sensor to light, the brighter your photo will be. The less light, the darker your photo will be. There are three ways for your camera to control the amount of light that reaches the image sensor. Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO, these three together constitute the exposure triangle.

3. Depth of Field (DOF)

Depth of field is used to define the portion of a photograph that is in focus. While working with a shallow depth of field, like in portraits, the background is blurred, and the subject remains sharp. A greater depth of field, commonly used in landscapes, keeps a greater area of your frame in focus. Depth of field is mainly influenced by aperture, focal length and focal distance.

4. ISO

ISO, much like exposure, has got to do with the amount of light you capture in a photograph. Technically speaking, ISO is the light sensitivity of the image sensor. Each camera comes with a native ISO, also known as the base ISO, which is generally around ISO 100. The lower the ISO, the cleaner the image, and the higher the ISO, the more then noise (grains) in the image. High ISO settings are generally used in low-light shooting conditions, and to counter the noise that accompanies a high ISO setting, slower shutter speed and wider aperture settings are used.

5. Shutter Speed

Shutter speed, in the simplest of terms, can be defined as the duration of time for which the shutter remains open. Generally measured in fractions of a second, such as 1/200 or 1/4000, shutter speed allows you to control both exposure and motion blur. While shorter shutter speeds capture lesser light, longer shutter speeds gives more time for light to fall on the sensor. Longer shutter speeds are widely used for capturing long exposure images such as star trails in night skies.

Wrap Up

What we have above are just a few terms among the many others that you must know as a photographer. Having a command over photography terminology is indispensable, and the best way to go about it is to learn it from veterans. Do you worry yourself like crazy to shoot the perfect picture every time you pick up your camera? Of course, we all do! But once in a while it’s relaxing to not think too much about the results and just have some fun with your camera.

Here’s a bunch of whacky ideas which may not please the puritans but will surely give you some fun moments with your camera. And don’t you worry about the results, as they will be as crazy as the ideas themselves.

Blurs :-

We try so hard to avoid them, but let’s intentionally blur everything using slow shutter speeds. Let’s move our cameras in different ways or move ourselves or shoot moving subjects at slow shutter speeds. The results might surprise you! Use low ISO and shoot in low light as slow shutter speeds allow more light to enter the camera.

Defocus :-

Our cameras use a number of high-tech processes to ensure our subjects are in sharp focus. But we’re trying to be whacky, right? So, let’s try to heavily de-focus things and take a different look at them. Since autofocus is meant to give us correct focus, the easiest way to do this is with manual focus. Just rotate the focusing ring to make the subjects appear defocused.

Upside down :-

Turn the camera upside down and have loads of fun with the crazy visuals!

Distortions :-

Go widest on your zoom lens and then go close to your subjects. For even more dramatic effects, use a low or high angle. Do it with people and pets to get funny effects!

Going close :-

Go as close as possible to everyday subjects to get their details. You can ask friends to guess what the subject is. You can crop the image to show only a certain portion as a clue, or better still, use a macro lens.

Point up :-

Point the camera up at whatever you see. You may end up with a bunch of amazing shots with a whole new perspective.

Double exposure :-

Expose two different frames on top of each other using in-camera multiple exposure mode, or the image overlay option in retouch menu (works with NEF files only).

Flares :-

Normally we try our best to avoid flares from entering our frames, or to get a well-placed one. For a whacky project, point your camera directly towards a light source, under-expose the shot, and repeat until you are happy with the result.

Remember, the idea is to have some fun with your camera and getting surprised with the results. Do follow the fundamentals of photography once you are done with this project. Or, just keep doing it!

The long awaited successor to the Nikon Z 7, the all-new Nikon Z7II is a full-frame mirrorless masterpiece that embodies dual processors, improved low light performance, superior video shooting capability and various welcome additions such as dual card slots. While designed with a larger Z mount that works with the NIKKOR Z line lenses, the Z 7II is also compatible with the Mount Adapter FTZ that allows it to be used with NIKKOR F-mount lenses. The camera now also welcomes a number of third-party add-ons and accessories. Let’s take a closer look at the top five features of the all-new Nikon Z 7II.

1. 45.7 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor

The Z7II comes equipped with a 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor that gives the camera stellar high-resolution shooting capability, alongside terrific low-light image quality. Back-illuminated design of the CMOS sensor is another highlight of the camera, which allows it to produce high-sensitivity output and reduced noise, even while shooting at a high ISO.

2. Dual EXPEED 6 Processors

The flagship full-frame mirrorless camera from Nikon comes with not one, but two EXPEED 6 image processing engines. As a result, the camera gets an increased buffer capacity, and can capture roughly thrice as many images the Z7 could do in a single burst of continuous shooting. The abundance of image processing power owed to the dual EXPEED 6 processors allows the Z 7II to continuously shoot up to 50 consecutive frames at 10 fps.

3. UHD 4K Video Recording

The uber-capable image processors and the powerful sensor make the Z 7II capable of capturing both stills and videos of top quality. The mirrorless camera comes loaded with a slew of advanced video functionalities, including but not limited to UHD 4K recording up to 60p, full HD 1080p recording up to 120p, and N-log gamma for flat-looking footage to produce HDR-ready videos. You can also record audio using the built-in microphone or use an external mic through the 3.5mm stereo jack available on the Z 7II.

4. Hybrid Autofocus System

The Z 7II leverages both contrast and phase detection, giving you a nuanced hybrid autofocus system for both stills and videos with 493 AF points covering nearly 90 percent of the image sensor, both horizontally and vertically. Both single (AF-S) and continuous (AF-C) come with a wide range of AF point selection modes, giving you complete freedom to capture stunning stills and videos. Besides human eye-detection autofocus, the Z 7II also offers animal-eye detection autofocus, which makes it perfect for wildlife photography.

5. Dual Card Slots

The Z 7II comes with dual card slots that work with XQD, CFexpress, and other SD-cards, while also being UHS-II compliant. Although XQD cards are not in popular use, they are still made compatible on the Z 7II to aid in practicality for those who would still like to use their faster XQD cards. The functionality to use two cards on the go helps you capture more stills and video footage without having to limit yourself due to memory size restrictions, or having to transfer data too frequently.

Wrap Up

Be it for the improved processing power or the sheer capability to shoot stunning videos, the Z 7II is an ideal companion for veterans and aspiring photographers alike. Book the Nikon Z 7II and get yourself a companion that will never let you down, or browse Nikon Z5, Z6, Z7, and Z6 II, to choose the one that best suits your requirements. The Nikon Z-Series of mirrorless cameras represents a paradigm shift from the DSLR camera technology, bringing stellar video quality within easy grasp of users. The Nikon photographers network is a great place to learn the basic and fine elements of the art of photography by keeping abreast with technology and trends, and updating your skills as a photographer or videographer. Read on as we explain some of the basics of full-frame mirrorless camera technology such as what you get with the Z-Series from Nikon.

What is a Mirrorless Camera?

The term mirrorless can be a little confusing as there are a number of camera types that don’t have mirrors but are not generally referred to as ‘mirrorless cameras’. An example being point-and-shoot cameras. The term mirrorless camera recently came into use and basically refers to digital interchangeable lens cameras (ILCs) that, unlike DSLR cameras, do not have any mirror. In DSLR cameras, mirrors are responsible for bouncing light to the optical viewfinder. Mirrorless cameras or Compact System Cameras (CSC), on the other hand, are digital cameras that can work with different lenses and do not need a mirror to bounce light to the viewfinder, instead it uses an advanced Electronic Viewfinder (EVF).

Why to Invest in a Mirrorless Camera?

  • Electronic Viewfinder – DSLR cameras come with optical viewfinders that sometimes fail to present an accurate image of what you are about to capture. The electronic viewfinders on mirrorless cameras, on the other hand, give you an incredible view of your captures. The Nikon Z 6II, for instance, has a 1.27-cm/0.5-in. 3690k-dot (Quad VGA)
  • Exceptional Video Quality – Videographers looking to get high quality video can never go wrong with mirrorless cameras. The latest mirrorless cameras make use of a hybrid autofocus technology, which is faster than what you get with DSLRs, making them ideal for capturing videos of moving subjects. Also, the lens construction, featuring elements such as silent focusing and controlled focus breathing, is optimal for movie recording.
  • Better Low-Light Performance – Thanks to improved autofocus performance and wider lens mounts (compared to DSLR cameras), mirrorless cameras promise notably superior low-light performance. In fact, the latest models from the Nikon Z Series come with low light autofocus for both stills and videos, which used to be the historic edge carried by DSLR cameras.
  • Easy Usage and Portability – Perhaps the most obvious reason why many photographers and videographers today prefer mirrorless cameras is their less-bulky nature when compared to DSLRs. Traditional DSLR cameras, especially full-frame models, could be a pain to carry, especially when working for extended periods. Mirrorless cameras, on the other hand, offer a much lighter and smaller alternative.
  • Faster Focus Tracking- The AF system on mirrorless cameras gives you the freedom to compose exactly what you want and the way you want. You can take advantage of hundreds of focus points across the frame or use auto-tracking to automatically choose focus points according to the position of the subject in the frame.
  • Reliability – They are dust and drip-resistant and offer the robustness to support any professional photographer. Body is made up of magnesium alloy. You can expect consistent and outstanding manufacturing technology.

The Last Word

Mirrorless cameras have a number of advantages over DSLRs. You can shoot stills or video, make easy adjustments on the fly without taking your eyes off the subject, enjoy superior autofocus performance, and make stunning UHD 4K videos. Join the Nikon photographers network to polish your mirrorless camera skills, submit your work to get it featured, be a part of our online workshops, and get useful Nikon tips and techniques. Animal photography can be a challenging endeavor to master. Having access to cutting-edge equipment and editing tools may not be enough to take stunning stills and videos of animals. It takes a lot of commitment and patience to get that desired shot that captures the true essence of the moment. Though animals are unpredictable and you have to take your time to get the perfect angle and that perfect shot, there are many tricks and skills that can help you in your journey towards excellence. You can find many such tips and advice at avenues such as Nikon Photography workshops. To help you get started, we present some handy tips and tricks for animal photography.

Know Your Gear

It may sound like cliche but it is important that you know the true abilities of your equipment. There is a very slim window of time to capture wildlife moments, and if you are not familiar with the finer aspects of your camera and other equipment, you may either miss the opportunity to capture the moment or end up taking a compromised shot. Be sure to know all that you need to know about basics, such as shutter speed, ISO settings, aperture settings, shooting modes, focal length, and other similar aspects of camera handling.

Understand Your Subject

Wildlife photography calls for capturing fleeting moments and there should come a time when you are able to predict the behaviour of the animals you capture in your lens. Though it is not possible to predict every movement of the subject, over a period of time, you will notice there are certain patterns that are ingrained into every animal species. Understanding your subject helps you to be prepared to capture the golden moment. There is only one way to understand wildlife and that is spending time with them.

Using Natural Light

While setting up artificial lighting may not even be possible in case of outdoor shoots, even when shooting indoors, a setup will call for a notable investment. Natural lighting is not only free, but can match and even supersede the results achievable with an artificial lighting setup. With natural light, you only need your camera and your subject, and you are all set. Another benefit of using natural light is that it does not leave any unnecessary heat signatures that may affect the shot. To get the best from natural light, shoot at the hours of golden light; the time right after sunrise and right before sunset.

Character and Habitat

Animal photography is more than just capturing animals at their most amazing moments; it is also about giving the complete picture to your audiences. While it is important to show the personalities of animals, it is also important to show their environments, as their habitats tell a lot about them. While you are free to use a telephoto lens when you want to get up and close with your subject, it is always a good idea to take a step back and use wide angle lenses to give your viewers an idea of the habitats of the animals.

Final Words

Animal photography can be a tricky affair that may call for some serious hours on your part, as you not only need to learn about photography but also about animals and their behaviours. It is, therefore, advisable to connect with experienced animal photographers and exchange tips and tricks to help you in the journey. That is exactly what you can expect from our online workshops. Besides getting a platform to exchange knowledge with fellow lensmen, at Capture With Nikon, you also get to enroll in a number of online workshops conducted by seasoned professialson from the Nikon Community, offering expert advice and guidance on various aspects of photography and videography.
