1. Consider Underexposing your Shot It isn’t uncommon to find stills in which water is overexposed and ends up looking plain white. Well, over-exposure is the one to blame in such a case. Your camera meter may not detect water when it is just a part of your frame, resulting in an overexposed shot. When capturing stills where water bodies are present, you may want to play around with the manual exposure settings to find a perfect middle ground to avoid such overexposure of water. Locate the plus and minus (exposure compensation) buttons on your camera and tweak the exposure settings till you achieve the desired output.

2. Try Experimenting with LED Lights

When capturing swimming pools and such water bodies in specific, it helps to experiment with LED lighting. Doing so can not only help you play around with the lighting but also with the color of the water as well. The next time you photograph a swimming pool in the evening, watch out for in-pool LED lighting and think of ways to leverage it to add depth and sophistication to your stills.

3. Keep Varying the Shutter Speed

Dreamy-looking water bodies and water splashes are two things most photographers would want to capture when clicking water-themed stills. Such stills can be easily captured by varying the shutter speed. While a long shutter speed can help you shoot dreamy-looking water bodies(eg. 5-10sec exposure), short shutter speed (eg. 1/500s) can help you capture water splash. All you need to do is find the ideal shutter speed setting for your desired shot.

4. Find the Best Time to Capture Reflections

Capturing reflections can be fairly simple, provided you know the right time to capture them. Evenings and mornings are generally the best times to capture stunning reflections on water bodies such as lakes and rivers. You may want to position your camera in such a way that you would capture more of the reflections and less of the shoreline. Also, try capturing both the shore and reflections in equal parts for introducing a sense of balance in your stills.

The Last Word

Apart from a grasp of photography skills, the key to capturing amazing water-themed shots lies in planning ahead. Decide upon the theme, location, and the right time for shooting in advance. Portrait photography is often considered one of the most challenging genres of photography. On top of having a command over camera settings and shooting dynamics, portrait photographers also need to establish a connection with their subject. Pulling it all off successfully, therefore, requires hours of practice and rich experience, along with the knowledge of right techniques and tips. That’s what you exactly get when you take Nikon’s online photography classes. Learn from the veterans of the field and find out all there is to know about clicking stunning portraits. To help, in this blog post, we present a 101 guide to portrait photography. Read on.

Prepare your Subject

Portrait photography requires you to connect with your subject and make them feel comfortable. On top of it, you also have to get up-close with your subject and not everyone is comfortable being photographed at such a close distance. It, therefore, becomes necessary to prepare your subject prior to shooting. Ideally, your subject should be stress free, comfortable, and in their element to help you capture lively portraits. Speak with your subject, get them acquainted with the poses and the kind of stills you plan on capturing.

Pay Attention to the Background

When it comes to portrait photography, the background you choose is also as important as your subject. Avoid choosing busy backgrounds as they rob the attention from the subject. Aim for a neutral background without any clutter to ensure that your viewer will focus on your subject alone. That said, you do not always have to go for a simple plain background. While shooting street portraits at Night, try shooting on a widest aperture available on your lens. This will allow you to get crips and soft bokeh of lights in the background. You can, for instance, add rice lights in the background or shoot against a colourful backdrop for more depth.

Get the Pose Right

After getting your subject comfortable and picking a background that works well, you would next have to focus on helping your subject pose according to your requirements. Take some time to get your subject acquainted with the pose you want. During shooting, feel free to offer feedback and suggestions to get the pose right. Keep some reference shots handy to clearly communicate your ideas with the subject. You are not sure about what pose to get started with, you can have your subject lean into the camera for an engaging, lively appeal.

Ensure the Lighting is On Point

Lighting is one of the most crucial aspects of any genre of photography. When it comes to portrait photography in specific, it is advisable to work in a well-lit condition. In most cases, natural daylight is considered the best kind of lighting to capture portraits. While working under direct sunlight can produce harsh results, you can have your subject’s back towards the direction of sunlight for creating a backlight effect. Use a reflector to fill in light into shadows and create subtle catch light in the subject’s eyes.An overcast day is also a great opportunity as it produces soft lighting that’s ideal for capturing portraits.

Choose a Shallow Depth of Field

Shooting in a shallow depth of field is perhaps one of the most common portrait photography tips out there. By doing so, you can get to place your subject against a background that is soft and blurred out, helping your subject stand out and receive complete attention from viewers. Adjusting the lens aperture helps you control the depth of field on your camera. Generally speaking, wider apertures produce greater blur in the background; so consider shooting with the largest aperture available in your lens.

Wrap Up

Clicking professional looking portraits doesn’t require you to invest in an expensive lighting setup or complex gear. A comfortable subject, favourable background, natural lighting, ability to work with your camera settings, and a strong foundation in basics of portrait photography can help you do a lot. www.CaptureWithNikon.in, Nikon India’s online photography community, can help. Starting from basic Nikon photography tips to expert tricks, you stand to learn a great deal by being part of Nikon’s vibrant photography community. To help you get started, in this post, we share five basic photography terms every photographer must know. Read on.

1. Focal Length

Focal length tells you the distance between the camera lens and the image formed on the film. Expressed in millimeters, focal length helps you gauge how ‘zoomed in’ an image may appear. While a lens with short focal length, say 18 mm, may give you a wider angle, a longer lens such as a 100 mm one, will give you a narrow, ‘zoomed in’ output. Based on the focal length, lenses are broadly classified in-to Wide angle lens and Telephoto lens.

2. Exposure

In the world of photography, the term exposure may mean a number of things. Broadly speaking, though, exposure has got to do with the amount of light camera capture in a particular photograph. The more you expose the camera sensor to light, the brighter your photo will be. The less light, the darker your photo will be. There are three ways for your camera to control the amount of light that reaches the image sensor. Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO, these three together constitute the exposure triangle.

3. Depth of Field (DOF)

Depth of field is used to define the portion of a photograph that is in focus. While working with a shallow depth of field, like in portraits, the background is blurred, and the subject remains sharp. A greater depth of field, commonly used in landscapes, keeps a greater area of your frame in focus. Depth of field is mainly influenced by aperture, focal length and focal distance.

4. ISO

ISO, much like exposure, has got to do with the amount of light you capture in a photograph. Technically speaking, ISO is the light sensitivity of the image sensor. Each camera comes with a native ISO, also known as the base ISO, which is generally around ISO 100. The lower the ISO, the cleaner the image, and the higher the ISO, the more then noise (grains) in the image. High ISO settings are generally used in low-light shooting conditions, and to counter the noise that accompanies a high ISO setting, slower shutter speed and wider aperture settings are used.

5. Shutter Speed

Shutter speed, in the simplest of terms, can be defined as the duration of time for which the shutter remains open. Generally measured in fractions of a second, such as 1/200 or 1/4000, shutter speed allows you to control both exposure and motion blur. While shorter shutter speeds capture lesser light, longer shutter speeds gives more time for light to fall on the sensor. Longer shutter speeds are widely used for capturing long exposure images such as star trails in night skies.

Wrap Up

What we have above are just a few terms among the many others that you must know as a photographer. Having a command over photography terminology is indispensable, and the best way to go about it is to learn it from veterans.
